Spring Fashion Has Sprung

It’s April, the weather is getting warmer, and the days are getting longer… you know what that means. The cold wintry days are soon to give way to a new season: allergy season. Except we are a fashion magazine, not WebMD, so we’ll save the health and wellness talk for the experts. Jokes aside, spring is approaching, and it goes without saying we each have already at least nine different ideas to style our favorite flowy skirt, one newly thrifted sheer top waiting to be juxtaposed with bottoms of an unexpected fabric, and two new pairs of sandals joining the rotation. Don’t stow away your cool weather pieces just yet though; our review of spring styles in the fashion community has forecasted upcoming trends that keep trench coats and tailored pants as part of the closet well beyond fall and winter. And so we present the 5 Fashion Trends of Spring 2023 you have to keep in mind for this coming season…

1. Sheer fabric

Cool, sexy, and fun — and also perfectly breathable in the warmer weather — are sheer pieces that have already crept their way up to become one of the top fashion trends well before the arrival of spring. Fendi, Valentino, Jacquemus, Heron Preston, Alexander McQueen, and Ottlinger, alongside other designers, have well embraced the concept of centering an outfit around one sheer piece and letting it dictate the whole look. Take inspiration from floor-length sheer couture dresses from Fendi or sheer polka dot stockings from Valentino couture styled with a sheer top, tiny shorts, and a dramatic coat for your next party look. Accessorize with sheer gloves as seen in the Jacquemus and Heron Preston Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear shows. When feeling bold, go for a striking sheer red top-to-bottom look accented by reflective shades and a plain belt as seen in Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear show, or sheer bottoms rich with embellishments like the pair in Ottolinger’s Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection. For more inspiration, take a look at Phil Oh’s Spring 2023 street style photos. The sheer number of looks you can create is simply infinite.

2.Black on black on black is the new black

Brace yourself for this one, there is a chance you may feel hot in your outfit — not just because of all the black that comprise this look, but because your fit is going to be fire. We have lost count of the chic all-black looks presented by designer after designer for Spring 2023, and although a monochromatic black look seems counter-intuitive to the typical cheery spring color palette, we are not complaining. The next time you plan an outfit for a social function, style an all-black look like Vera Wang, Sacai, Coperni, and Dior did in their Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear shows.

3. Bringing formalwear from the office to the picnic

First we’re bringing an all-black color palette into spring, now we’re extending formalwear beyond formal occasions? Saint Laurent and Dries Van Noten have the answer to this question. Whether monochromatic or colorful, worn with a skirt or trousers, showing some skin or fully getting enveloped by an oversized trench coat, designers sure make a case for bringing formalwear over to casual spring settings.

4. Denim, but not the basic kind

The perfect pair of denim jeans is a timeless wardrobe staple, but when it comes to Spring 2023 trends, we’re talking denim tops, denim jumpsuits, denim dresses, distressed denim, different washes of denim, and so on, even denim boots. Basically everything other than your basic pair of jeans. Diesel’s Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection is the perfect source of inspiration.

5. Fabrics mix-and-match

You know how you would go “this or that” when asking your friend for style advice? Spring 2023 would answer “both, together”. Create juxtaposition and friction by styling together fabrics that you would not naturally think of matching together. Pair cotton with fur, fur with leather, knit with nylon, linen with spandex, leather with linen — you get the drill. See this in the works in the Bottega Veneta, Hermès, and Junya Watanabe Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear collections.

These trends are making us all the more excited for the upcoming season; spring could not arrive later. As we patiently wait for the warm weather to rock a black-on-black sheer look incorporating formalwear and a mix of fabrics, let us savor this final stretch of winter and all the fashion that comes with it.
