While it might seem like the world has stopped in the events of the past year, hearts are still beating, people are still falling in love, and weddings are still happening...just not in the way we’re used to. With the now increasing popularity of intimate and extremely casual wedding ceremonies (or just plain elopements), we’re seeing a time in history where wedding fashion is reflecting the new, light-hearted outlook on the once traditional wedding ceremonies. So in honour of all the outgoing and crafty brides of recent covid weddings, here’s a list of the top wedding trends we’ve spotted during 2021.

Top Wedding Dress Trends of 2021:

1. Empire waistlines

You can thank the Netflix breakout show of last December, Bridgerton, for the resurgence in empire waistlines. Originally modelled after traditional grecian styles, this style cuts just below the bust for a soft, flowy draping. This style would particularly suit the bride looking for a dress that would suit a romantic, outdoor wedding- maybe on a beach or in the woods?

2. Square necklines

This past year, it’s been all about the collarbone when it comes to the fashion world, and bridal trends are no exception to this. With bridal designers putting their own spins on this neckline, you can be sure to find a large variety of gowns that will show off your collarbone and highlight your neck.

3. Puffy sleeves

Whether you credit the resurgence of this trend to Bridgerton or a renewed interest in 80's trends, puffy sleeves are back and better than ever. While often paired with the above mentioned square necklines for a sweet and sassy cut, puffy sleeves can suit all kinds of dresses, making them a versatile but stand-out addition to your wedding gown.

4. Sleeky Slip Minimalism

The resurgence of nineties style slips have made their way into the bridal world, with wedding designers putting their own spin on this minimalistic style. For the bride who wants all eyes on her, this trend is definitely the way to go.

5. Ruffles

Some trends, like the above slip dresses, became popular because of the want to go simple and minimalistic during these times. Others are popularized because of the need to go all out when we finally have a reason to go outside. Ruffles are a prime example of the latter. Whether it’s big ruffles or small, many designers have been making dresses with ruffles for the bride who wants to go all out after being cooped up inside all year.

6. Shorter hemlines

With the need for small, covid-safe ceremonies, many have been opting for cocktail length dresses to suit their smaller weddings. Whether it’s at the courthouse, in your backyard, or in a socially distanced wedding venue, a cocktail length wedding gown is the perfect way to celebrate a toned down wedding while giving you plenty of leeway to move around and get out on your (socially-distanced) dance floor!

7. Wedding Masks

Wedding masks are the perfect accessory for someone looking to find a silver lining in getting married and needing to be covid-safe during the pandemic. From lacy white masks to dramatic blinged out masks, there’s a huge variety in what kind of masks you can wear for your wedding. Matching them to your outfits or the wedding colours are also a great idea.
