“This spring [is] my favourite season in a long time,” Kari Owen said, the business owner of Adorn Boutique. Her shop is curated for spring lovers. Adorn Boutique is a family-owned business located in Calgary, Alberta. The store sells feminine apparel, accessories, and jewelry. The pieces they sell are for all age groups, and of course consist of tulle skirts, floral prints, and feminine silhouettes – all comfortable and perfect for spring and summer outfits. Honestly, who can resist?

Growing up in Smithers, British Columbia, Kari was not exposed to fashion much as a child. But even then, she would dress up as a fashion designer on Halloween when she was a kid. Fashion might not have existed in her town, but it was truly in her blood.

When Kari graduated from university, she realized that there weren’t a lot of options for her own feminine style in different shops— especially not affordable ones. So she had the goal in mind to have her own shop someday. “I have known that I wanted to work in fashion since I was about 10. I’ve always loved it,” said Owen.

After 15 years, Kari and her mom made the life-changing decision to purchase Adorn Boutique, just right after her 25th birthday — eventually becoming business partners. They decided to keep the original name since it had personality and “have been working hard to grow it into what it is today ever since”. A year before she purchased the store, Kari happened to be working as a part-time employee there, when the former owner decided to put the store up for sale. Kari took the chance to seize the opportunity to follow her dreams, and become a store owner in the fashion industry. The timing worked perfectly.

Kari wanted the shop to be primarily focused on dresses but now one can find different styles of clothes such as denim, sweaters and pyjamas, making the boutique a great spot for shopping in the cooler seasons as well! “I love ruffles, florals, [and] pastels. [My] favourite color pink “plays a huge part in our Adorn aesthetic,” Kari adds.

An interesting piece about Adorn Boutique? They support designers all around the world. All of their products come from different designers in Canada, as well as other countries including Australia and Europe to bring diverse designs to Calgary.

As for the future, Kari and her team hope to get a bigger space soon for the shop to grow. For Kari, who has always been willing to follow her dreams and grow bigger as a person, her one piece of advice to anyone else looking to have their own store is to “work hard and learn, and problem solve on the fly [because] you can make it happen.”
